We Own The Nightmares and Our Destiny

Subcycle in Middle School
Subcycle In Middle School
I have been making music since my days before High School.  Yet, only until recently have I really begun to see the fruits of my labor.  This past January I hosted Rave @ Dave's Volume 3 for over 100 people.  It is worth noting that there was no alcohol or illegal drugs and most of the people that came "don't normally do this rave thing".  What is more PLU then that?  We can argue about PLU, PLUR, and PLURR later...  Also, my 101 Dubstep Mix has hit over 3,000 listens/views and I am working on my 2013 101 Mix on a daily basis.

What set my motivations into hyper drive is when DJ Philo from Harare, Zimbabwe clicked the "Favorite" button on a Mashup I made using pieces of one of his remixes.  You can listen to my Mashup below:

What is so awesome about that you ask?  Let's take a look at the map:

Two people separated by 8,000 Miles collaborated to make something new.  Defying space and time we did this.  Not once did I contact DJ Philo saying "Hey!  Let's do this".  No.  I stumbled into his remix of We Own The Night on Youtube and just did it.

Well, Pendulum had something to do with it too but they didn't favorite my Mashup on SoundCloud yet.

Thank you very much for listening to my music and maybe one day we will collaborate through space and time like I did with DJ Philo.

Enjoy,

Skrillex Vs Kriss Kross - Reptile Jump

Reptile Jump epitomizes a clash of genres that at first glance should not work well together but once forced to stay in the same room for a while end up making the perfect match.  This mashup started as a small idea and turned into full-fledged obsession. School work was put on hold and each friend and acquaintance nearby was forced to listen to multiple versions for opinions.  How did this idea come about?  A dream.  Almost.

I was about to fall asleep one night and Kriss Kross's Jump was stuck in my head.  I had listened to it earlier that day to satisfy my need for a good throwback track I have not heard in a while.  It satisfied my throwback desires so much the chorus was stuck in my head all the way to my pillow nearly 8 hours later.  Slowly the "Jump Jump" sample by Kriss Kross morphed in the "Jump" sample used in Skrillex's Reptile.  My eyes flung open and from that point on I knew I was not going to get any sleep that night.  4 hours later at 5am in the morning my FL Studios playlist took shape.
Subcycle - Reptile Jump (Skrillex Vs Kriss Kross) FLStudio Playlist
While as simple as it may seem this is only what can be seen on the surface of the project file.  28 Mixer Inserts were used along with 15 sidechains of effects, two of which were dedicated for sidechain compression.  The compression chains were used mostly for the competing basslines and kick drums in each of the three songs mixed.  All said, this was a lot of fun to deal with.

I'm not going to give away all my secrets on how I pulled this mashup off but perhaps AudioCollege will.  Your #1 Source for Everything Audio.

Thank You for Listening!

Love,

Biography

My best friend Matt drives me home one day after play rehearsal for my high school's production of West Side Story.  The entire ride home Matt continually brings up this video he MUST show to me when we get to the house.  The video is "Shuffle Practice IV".  Watching this video is the first time I heard Hardstyle, the hard snares, the booming kick, the reverse bass, and the insanely distorted melodies of Hardstyle.  I fell in love, with both the Melbourne Shuffle and Hardstyle.  I always liked techno, but never dove any further then Tiesto, Benny Benassi, and Daft Punk, the gateway producers to the huge world of electronic music.

A week goes by and I have already downloaded over 5,000 Hardstyle, Hard House, and Hard Trance songs.  Between listening to this amazing music I watched Melbourne Shuffle tutorial after tutorial in hopes of learning this intriguing dance.  It mystified me.  Striving to master this dance I joined an online forum dedicated to the dance, Shufflin.net (At the time is was Melbshuffle.com).  Here I talked with masters of the movement.  I learned everything I could.  This forum had a section entitled "Music Production".  I Had to check it out.  I got my hands on Fruity Loop Studios and my curiosity led the rest of the way.  A new hobby took over:  Producing Hardstyle.

I needed a name now.  David Leek doesn't sound cool.  My first thought was Geistsoul13, a username I have used on many websites before music production took over my life.  Eventually I decided to shorten it to DJ Geist13.  Under that name I stated releasing song after song almost monthly.  They were half produced and never mastered.  I didn't know what mastering was at the time.

College hits, and hits hard.  School work takes up most of my time and clubs and events take up the rest.  Even still I wanted to continue to produce music.  I want music to be my career.  It is already my life.  I approached everyone on campus asking if they needed a theme song, score music.  The University's Television Network jumped at the chance to finally get away from copyrighted music and poorly produced royalty free tracks.  Most producers could not wait to get their very own theme song for their show.  Two semesters later I made the theme song for 8 shows, the score for a short film, and the score for a commercial by She'sTheFirst.org.

Sophomore year.  DJ Geist13 is getting old, and hard to say.   I wanted a change.  I needed a cooler name, an easier name, something with Sub or Woofer, or Bass.  I typed every name I could think of in Google, Last.fm, ReverbNation, and Youtube.  Subcycle!  Finally, one that isn't already taken.  With the new name I wanted a new level of professionalism.  I vowed never to release a song unless it's massive.  I will not settle for anything less, and neither should my fans and future fans too.

Thank You,

Subcycle
